Propagation (Building An Aeroponic Cloner)

It is January, and clones are hard to come by. From what I hear all the babies are going up north to begin vegetative growth for this summer’s outdoor crop. Since we have a brand new tent to fill, and a whole closet full of bushy mothers, we are going to fill it ourselves. Cloning is traditionally done in a closed humid environment. All feeding was done foliarly, every couple of hours, to maintain an environment humid enough for the tiny rootless plant to drink through the air.

However that is rather time consuming.

In a hydroponic garden with lights, and pumps, and timers, is only a couple steps away from going aeroponic. Aeroponics is the practice of rooting in air, and feeding by a regular nutrient mist. The idea is to build a closed system in which the stems are misted, but the leaves stay dry, encouraging the plant to begin rooting faster.

I followed instructions I found here.

There are a few notes I would like to make, when cutting out the notch for the cord, it is easier to cut it in the tub than the lid. However this is a site that leaks, as are the handles that seal the tub, so I advise sealing them with silicone.

In addition, instead of using drip misters, EZ Cloner 360 sprayers are available from your local hydro store, or on the internets.

Also, running inside, you will need a sun. I suggest a High Output T5 Panel, I use a SunBlaze 44.

As for rooting solution, as soon as the cutting is taken, Dip it into a rooting gel.
Be sure to get the cutting through the bottom of the net pot, so it has sufficient access to water and airJuicy Roots by Advanced Nutrients is an excellent source of 3Indole-Acetic Acid (IAA) and B1 to help with cutting shock.

Indole Acetic Acid (IAA), Indole Butyric Acid (IBA) and Napthalene Acetic Acid (NAA) are the most effective, and widely used agricultural rooting hormones available. When used in combination, they can greatly increase root production. The cloning gel only has IAA, the other two can be found in K-L-N. Follow the directions for mist propagation.

I’ll post pictures of my roots as soon as they are ready.
